Which Socket Set Is Worth the Money? What Separates Sockets That Last

Ask a mechanic which socket set is worth the money and you will not get a brand. You will get a checklist: the steel and how it was treated, how the socket bears on the nut, how many teeth the ratchet has, and who takes it back when it cracks. A set that scores on those lasts; a set that scores on piece count rounds nuts. Here it is, read against the seven sets in our socket sets ranking. Nothing is bought or handled; every figure is the maker's own or from our category data.

What you are paying for

The steel. Nearly every chrome-plated hand socket sold in the UK is chrome vanadium; the name says little, because the forging and heat treatment do the work. A socket is forged, then hardened and tempered, and the tempering sets hardness against toughness: too hard cracks, too soft rounds off in the ratchet. CASOMAN states drop-forged and heat-treated, Sealey hardened and tempered; an alloy with nothing about treatment is half a specification. Chrome molybdenum is tougher and more ductile, so under an impact wrench it deforms instead of cracking. One set in our ranking publishes it, the DAYUAN hub nut set, heat treated, hardened and tempered, for air and battery impact tools; CASOMAN and KIRXST are impact rated in heat-treated chrome vanadium.

Six-point or twelve-point. A six-point socket has one wall per flat of the nut, and a wall shaped to bear on the flat rather than the corner (CASOMAN and Bahco describe their flank drive and Dynamic-Drive profiles this way; Draper's HI-TORQ and Sealey's WallDrive are their names for it) puts the load into the strongest part of the fastener, so a corroded nut stays a hexagon. A twelve-point socket, the double hexagonal form in the ISO standard, has twice the contact points and engages every 30 degrees instead of every 60. Right for twelve-point fasteners and a nut you cannot see; wrong for anything already rounding.

Wall thickness. Thin walls reach a recessed wheel nut or a plug down its well; thick walls survive hammer blows, which is why impact sockets are bulkier. One socket cannot do both, so Sealey's spark plug set packs a 16mm thin-wall beside its standard 16mm.

A standard the maker can cite. ISO 2725-1 specifies the dimensions, designation and marking of hand-operated square drive sockets; the 2017 edition is current, adopted in the UK as BS ISO 2725-1:2017, with DIN 3124 cited beside it. Teng states its sets are designed and manufactured to DIN 3120, DIN 3124 and ISO 2725; Draper states the 16355 is manufactured and tested generally in accordance with DIN 3124 and ISO 2725-1; CASOMAN cites ANSI. Nothing else here cites one.

Ratchet teeth. Tooth count sets the swing needed to pick up the next tooth. Bahco publishes 60 teeth and a 6 degree action angle on the SL25; Draper's 72-tooth ratchet needs 5 degrees. Nothing on a bench; behind an engine, one degree decides whether the nut turns or the socket comes off to reposition.

The guarantee, and where it is honoured. Halfords Advanced hand tools go back to the nearest Halfords store, where a colleague replaces it on the spot or orders one in. Draper's lifetime warranty on hand tools is claimed through the place of purchase. CASOMAN publishes a limited lifetime warranty, reached through the marketplace seller or a support email; KIRXST, DAYUAN and Ginour publish no UK route. Draper excludes screwdriver bits, hex and TX-STAR keys and hinged cases, so a set's bits are not covered when its sockets are. A guarantee you can use is one you can walk to.

The sizes a UK home and car actually need

Every car sold in the UK is metric. 1/4in drive covers anything up to about 13mm; 3/8in is the engine bay, brackets and garden machinery; 1/2in is anything with a torque figure. Most UK cars take a 17 or 19mm wheel fastener; hub carriers, damper bolts and tow bar fittings sit at 27 to 32mm; hub and driveshaft nuts run from 29 to 38mm. Imperial still turns up on older British machinery, American kit and some trailer hardware; the WORKPRO set carries AF from 5/32in to 1/2in on 1/4in drive and 7/16in to 9/16in on 3/8in. Older British engineering may be Whitworth or BSF instead, which nothing here covers.

A deep socket swallows a stud standing proud of its nut: Draper's 1/4in set carries eight deep sockets beside its standard ones and the KIRXST 1/2in set is all deep. A spark plug socket is a deep socket with a rubber insert that brings the plug out; Sealey's 3/8in set covers 14, 16 and 21mm. Extensions and a universal joint are the rest of the reach: Draper packs 100 and 150mm bars and a joint, KIRXST 3in, 5in and 10in bars.

Piece counts: why a bigger box can hold fewer sockets

The number on the lid counts bits, Allen keys, adaptors and bars, and bits inflate it. VonHaus publishes the contents of its 130-piece kit: 13 sockets and 104 bits. Bahco's SL25 is 25 pieces and 12 are sockets; Draper's 16355 is 47 pieces and 21 are sockets; WORKPRO's 39-piece set is 34 sockets. The 138-piece Ginour set publishes no socket list, so nobody can say whether its 1/2in side reaches 17 or 19mm. A listing that will not give you those numbers has given you its specification.

Impact sockets are a separate purchase

A chrome hand socket is hardened and thin-walled, and an impact wrench's hammer blows can crack or shatter it. Impact sockets are thicker-walled, in a tougher alloy, finished black phosphate and sold rated for impact use. The colour is not the test and neither is the alloy (two of the black sets here are chrome vanadium); the test is whether the maker rates the socket for a gun. Buying the gun too? Storage, and the case nobody guarantees

Most of this shelf ships in a blow-moulded case: Bahco's high density polythene case is 35 by 165 by 85mm, and CASOMAN publishes no case. Halfords excludes cases and foam inserts from its guarantee and Draper excludes hinged cases: the case is the one part of a socket set its maker will not stand behind, which tells you what they expect to fail first. A set that travels wants a latch you have tried, or a rail.

The brands on the UK shelf

Bahco is the one trade name on the Amazon UK socket shelf; it publishes a profile and a tooth count but describes its steel only as high-performance alloy. Draper, established in 1919, publishes the most here: alloy, finish, profile, DIN and ISO conformity and the warranty. Halfords Advanced describes its ratchets, sockets and spanners as durable alloy steel; Teng cites DIN 3120, DIN 3124 and ISO 2725 on chrome vanadium satin sockets; Sealey publishes chrome vanadium, hardened and tempered, with its WallDrive profile (none of the three is in our Amazon-only ranking). In the marketplace tail, CASOMAN and DAYUAN publish alloy, finish, profile and size list, KIRXST most of that, Ginour an alloy and a piece count; none publishes a UK service route.

Which of our picks fits which buyer

Small fasteners. The Draper 16355 47 Piece 1/4in Square Drive Metric Socket Set: 13 standard and eight deep six-point HI-TORQ sockets from 4 to 14mm, a 72-tooth ratchet, DIN and ISO conformity and a lifetime warranty.

A pannier or a glovebox. The Bahco SL25 25 Piece 1/4in Drive Socket and Bit Set: 12 sockets from 4 to 13mm on the Dynamic-Drive profile, a 60-tooth ratchet and an exceptional owner rating on a very deep record.

House, bike and mower, with imperial. The WORKPRO 39 Piece Socket Set, 1/4in and 3/8in Drive, Metric and AF: 34 sockets on two drives in metric and AF, standard depth, 13mm ceiling, no 1/4in ratchet.

Wheels and studs on a gun. The KIRXST 18 Piece 1/2in Drive Deep Impact Socket Set, 10-24mm: 15 deep six-point sockets in heat-treated chrome vanadium, plus 3in, 5in and 10in extension bars.

Big fasteners on a gun. The CASOMAN 14 Piece 1/2in Drive Standard Impact Socket Set, 11-32mm: shallow six-point flank drive, laser-etched sizes, an ANSI statement and the deepest owner record of the impact sets here. No case.

Are expensive socket sets worth it?

When the extra buys something you can name, yes: a published alloy and heat treatment, a flank-drive profile, a DIN or ISO statement, a fine-tooth ratchet, deep sockets beside the standard ones, and a guarantee honoured at a counter you can reach. When the extra buys pieces, no.

Six-point or twelve-point sockets?

Six-point for anything you will lean on, anything corroded and anything an impact wrench touches; twelve-point for twelve-point fasteners and a nut you have to find by feel. Buying one set, buy six-point: every set here that publishes a point count is.

Do I need impact sockets for an impact wrench?

Yes. A chrome hand socket is not rated for the hammer blows and can crack or shatter on a gun. Buy sockets the maker sells for impact use: 10 to 24mm deep for wheels and studs, 11 to 32mm shallow for reach, 29 to 38mm for hubs.
