How We Rank

Most "best of" lists throw 15 or 20 options at you and call it a day. We think that defeats the purpose. If you're after a recommendation, you shouldn't have to wade through a novel to find it.

Seven is the sweet spot. It's enough to cover different budgets and use cases, but tight enough that every product on the list genuinely earns its spot. If something doesn't stack up, it doesn't make the cut - simple as that.

Every category starts with a broad sweep. Here's how we narrow it down:

1. Manufacturer specifications - We start with the published specs, capacities, wattage, materials, warranty terms, and feature lists from manufacturers. The hard numbers.
2. Published reviews - We read through reviews from established UK and international publications - Which?, Good Housekeeping, Wirecutter, and others depending on the category - to see what reviewers who did handle the tool actually found.
3. Aggregated owner feedback - Hundreds of owner reviews on Amazon UK and other UK retailers tell us what real owners actually experience over time. We pay particular attention to recurring complaints and consistent praise.
4. UK availability- A product can be brilliant, but if you can't buy it easily in the UK with reasonable shipping and local consumer protections, it doesn't make our list. We only rank products readily available on Amazon UK.

We're upfront about how we work. We don't buy, test or handle the products ourselves. AI tools compile and synthesise the research described above (specs, published reviews, owner feedback) and draft the rankings. No editorial team reads each ranking before it goes live; instead, automated routines verify every price, ASIN and availability claim against the live Amazon UK listing before publication and again every day, and re-rank when a product goes out of stock or is superseded. Every product price, ASIN, and availability claim is verified against current Amazon UK listings before a post goes live, and again on every daily price update. If a number on the site is wrong, it's because Amazon's listing changed in the hours since our last sync - not because we made it up.

Every product gets a Top7 Score out of 10, and the list is ranked by it: the number one pick is the highest-scoring product in its category. Price is never part of the score. Value shows up separately, as the price you see, the tier label on each card, and the Best Value badge.

Every category on the site uses the same method, introduced in September 2026 to replace an equal-weighted average that let a low price lift a lesser product over a better one. Power tools sold in the UK are rarely reviewed by the outlets we draw on, so on most cards the owner rating carries the critics' share and the card says so. Here is how the score is built:

• Product, 70%- three or four category-specific dimensions, each scored 0 to 10 in half-points against a written rubric that says what a 10, 8, 6 and 4 look like. Weights differ by category and are printed on each category page. Where a dimension can be read straight from a specification, such as rated battery life, the rubric turns the figure into the score. Every dimension score carries a one-line note saying what it rests on; open "How we scored it" on any card to read them.
• Owners, 15% - the Amazon UK star rating, refreshed daily and weighted toward the category average when a product has few reviews, so a handful of early five-star reviews cannot lift a new product over an established one.
• Critics, 15% - the average of published review scores from an allowlist of outlets, converted to a 10-point scale and stored with a link to each review. It needs at least two reviews of the exact model; when there are fewer, its share moves to the owner rating, so that 30% of every score is evidence from outside this site, and the card says so.

Here's what the scale means:

• 9 and up: Outstanding - the benchmark for the category.
• 8 to 8.9: Excellent - genuinely impressive with only minor shortcomings.
• 7 to 7.9: Very good - a strong buy with a clear trade-off.
• 6 to 6.9: Decent - does the job and earns its place, usually on price.
• Under 6 - does not make our lists.

The number one pick has to clear a gate before it is published: a clear lead over number two or a recorded reason for the call, a solid owner rating, at least two published reviews, and stock that ships from the UK. Its card carries a line saying why it is number one. If two products tie, the one with the higher critic average ranks first, then the higher owner rating.

We don't buy or test the products. The dimension scores come from published specifications and the consensus of published reviews, applied to a rubric you can read; the owner and critic terms are measured. Where a specification is missing the note says the score is provisional.

Not everyone has the same budget, and the most expensive option isn't always the right one. That's why we split our top 7 into three tiers:

• Premium- The no-compromise picks. These are the best products money can buy if budget isn't your primary concern. You're paying top dollar, but you're getting top performance.
• Best Value- The sweet spot. These products punch well above their weight and offer the best balance of performance and price. For most people, this is where we'd point you first.
• Budget- The best bang for your buck. These products deliver solid performance without breaking the bank. Perfect if you're after something reliable without the premium price tag.

The tier system matters because a 9/10 product at £800 and a 7/10 product at £200 serve completely different needs. We want you to find the right product for yoursituation, not just the "best" one on paper.

The power tool market moves fast, so our lists need to keep up. Two automated routines keep what you read in step with what Amazon UK is actually selling:

• Prices are verified before they are shown- a price only appears here when it has come from Amazon's own API and is less than three days old. Anything older, or any product we cannot confirm, shows “Check price” and sends you to the Amazon listing for the live number instead. That rule never lets a stale price sit on the page pretending to be current.
• Rankings are re-audited on a regular cycle - every category is checked for availability, newer models and anything else that changes the order. If a product is discontinued, loses its buy box or is replaced by a newer version, it is swapped out and the ranking is rebuilt.

Every page shows when it was last reviewed and confirms that prices are updated daily, so you always know you're looking at current info.

Let's be crystal clear: no brand, manufacturer, or retailer pays for placement on our lists. Full stop. Our rankings are based entirely on the research described above - specs, published reviews, owner feedback, and UK availability.

We don't accept sponsored placements, paid reviews, or "gifted" products in exchange for favourable coverage. If a product is on our list, it's because we genuinely reckon it's one of the best options available to UK buyers.

We include honest pros andcons for every product. If owner reviews flag a dodgy build, a motor that struggles under load, or a battery that fades fast, we'll tell you. Honest recommendations are the only kind worth making.
