Single-voltage 18V EXT packs such as the 4.0 Ah EHPB18-Li-4 Elitecell fit the 18V tools only.

  • Makita 18V LXT · 18 V

    Screwfix, Toolstation, D&M Tools, ITS, Powertool World, Amazon UK, FFX. Widely sold; no UK retailer exclusivity.

    Fits: Every 18V LXT tool, and 36V (18V x2) LXT tools that take two packs. Common UK capacities are BL1815N 1.5 Ah, BL1830B 3.0 Ah, BL1840B 4.0 Ah, BL1850B 5.0 Ah and BL1860B 6.0 Ah. The 4.0 Ah and larger packs need a tool with the star symbol or a yellow battery terminal (Star Protection); older non-star tools take the BL1830 or BL1815N.

    Not: 40V max XGT tools, 12V max CXT tools, and the old pod-style NiCd/NiMH tools. There is no tool-side adapter to XGT.

  • Makita 40V max XGT · 36 V

    Screwfix, Toolstation, D&M Tools, ITS, Powertool World, Amazon UK.

    Fits: All XGT tools, including 80V max (40V x2) tools that take two XGT packs (2.5, 4.0, 5.0 and 8.0 Ah).

    Not: Any LXT tool. Makita states batteries are compatible only within their own platform; the only bridge is the charger-side ADP10 that charges LXT packs on an XGT charger.

  • Makita 12V max CXT · 12 V

    Screwfix, Toolstation, Amazon UK, trade retailers.

    Fits: All 12V max CXT slide-battery tools (BL1021B 2.0 Ah, BL1041B 4.0 Ah).

    Not: 18V LXT tools, and the older 12V max pod-style tools and chargers.

  • Milwaukee M18 (REDLITHIUM, High Output, FORGE) · 18 V

    Toolstation, ITS, D&M Tools, Powertool World, FFX, Amazon UK.

    Fits: Milwaukee's own line: all M18 batteries are compatible with all M18 tools and chargers, from the 2 Ah CP pack to the 12 Ah High Output and FORGE packs. High-draw FUEL tools give full power only on High Output or FORGE packs, and some tools want the side handle fitted with 6 Ah and larger packs because the torque climbs.

    Not: M12 tools, MX FUEL equipment, and other brands.

  • Milwaukee M12 · 12 V

    Toolstation, ITS, D&M Tools, Powertool World, FFX, Amazon UK.

    Fits: All M12 tools and chargers; every M12 pack fits every M12 tool.

    Not: M18 tools.

  • DeWalt 18V XR (called 20V MAX in the US), incl. PowerStack · 18 V

    Screwfix, Toolstation, B&Q, Wickes, Amazon UK, ITS, Powertool World. Very widely sold.

    Fits: All 18V XR tools and XR chargers. PowerStack packs fit everything on the rail. FlexVolt 54V packs also fit and run as 18V packs. DeWalt's own note: maximum initial voltage 20 V, nominal 18 V, which is why the same pack is 20V MAX in the US.

    Not: 12V XR tools, and the old 18V pod-style NiCd tools unless you fit the DCA1820 adapter.

  • DeWalt FlexVolt 54V/18V · 54 V

    Screwfix, Toolstation, Amazon UK, ITS, Powertool World.

    Fits: FlexVolt 54V tools at 54V, and every 18V XR tool at 18V: the pack switches itself (DCB546 6.0/2.0 Ah, DCB547 9.0/3.0 Ah, DCB548 12.0/4.0 Ah).

    Not: 12V XR tools, and the DCA1820 adapter. FlexVolt tools do not run on 18V packs.

  • DeWalt 12V XR · 12 V

    Screwfix, Toolstation, Amazon UK, trade retailers.

    Fits: All 12V XR tools (the older 10.8V range shares the rail).

    Not: 18V XR tools.

  • Bosch Professional 18V (blue): GBA and ProCORE18V, AMPShare · 18 V

    Screwfix, Toolstation, ITS, Powertool World, Amazon UK, FFX.

    Fits: All Bosch Professional 18V tools and chargers back to 2008, plus the AMPShare partner brands that share the rail (Fein, Rothenberger, Steinel, Wagner, Ledlenser and others). ProCORE18V packs are the high-output line; standard GBA packs fit the same tools at lower delivery.

    Not: Bosch Home & Garden green tools and the Power for All alliance. Bosch's own position: the two battery systems are not compatible, and the chargers are not cross-compatible either, so a Professional charger will not charge a green battery and vice versa.

  • Bosch Home & Garden 18V POWER FOR ALL (green) · 18 V

    B&Q, Wickes, Homebase, Argos, Amazon UK, and some lines at Screwfix.

    Fits: Bosch green 18V tools (the UniversalXxx, EasyXxx and AdvancedXxx ranges) and the POWER FOR ALL Alliance. Flymo, Gardena and Husqvarna are the significant UK members, alongside Steinel and Rapid, so a Flymo mower battery and a Bosch green drill battery are the same pack.

    Not: Bosch Professional blue and AMPShare tools; separate again from the Bosch green 36V garden system.

  • Ryobi 18V ONE+ (incl. HP) · 18 V

    B&Q, Homebase, Screwfix, Halfords, Very, Argos, Amazon UK and specialist retailers. Ryobi is not retailer-exclusive in the UK, so you can price-check a pack across half a dozen sheds.

    Fits: Both ONE+ and ONE+ HP batteries work across the ONE+ range, which is the point of Ryobi's own 'one battery, hundreds of tools' claim. HP packs add terminals for HP brushless tools, which run on older packs at reduced performance.

    Not: A small number of ONE+ products do not accept the largest packs, so check the tool. Ryobi 36V MAX POWER outdoor tools use a separate pack with no cross-fit either way, and the USB Lithium 4V range is separate again.

  • Ryobi 36V MAX POWER (called 40V in the US) · 36 V

    B&Q, Homebase, Amazon UK.

    Fits: Ryobi 36V outdoor tools only (mowers, blowers, line trimmers, chainsaws).

    Not: 18V ONE+ tools, and 18V packs do not run 36V tools. Some 36V mowers take two 18V ONE+ packs instead; check the model.

  • Einhell Power X-Change 18V · 18 V

    Screwfix, Amazon UK, B&Q, Toolstation, Argos. Sold in the UK under the Einhell name directly rather than under a retailer's own brand, so packs and chargers are available from several shops.

    Fits: One battery across the whole Einhell Power X-Change 18V range plus the 36V (2 x 18V) tools that take two packs. Capacities run from 2.0 Ah to 5.2 Ah, plus the Multi-Ah PXC Plus packs sold at Screwfix, whose rated capacity depends on which tool they are fitted to.

    Not: Every other brand. A 36V Power X-Change tool needs two 18V packs and will not start on one, which catches people the same way Makita's 18V x2 range does.

  • Erbauer 18V EXT (and 18/36V dual-voltage) · 18 V

    Screwfix exclusive. Erbauer is Screwfix's own tool brand and is not sold by Toolstation, B&Q, Amazon UK or any other channel, so buying into EXT means buying into one retailer.

    Fits: Any 18V, 36V and 72V (2 x 36V) Erbauer EXT tool.     Screwfix exclusive. Titan is Screwfix's budget own brand, sitting below Erbauer.

    Fits: All Titan TXP 18V tools. Packs run TTI801BAT 2.0 Ah and TTI803BAT 5.0 Ah. TXP is also sold in a 36V form for landscaping tools.

    Not: The important one: the TXP range is not compatible with previous non-TXP Titan tools and batteries, so an older Titan 18V tool and a new TXP pack will not work together. Also incompatible with Erbauer EXT, despite both being Screwfix brands.

  • HiKOKI MultiVolt 36V/18V · 36 V

    ITS, Toolden, ECA Toolfast, HiKOKI Power Tools Direct, Amazon UK. A trade-channel brand in the UK rather than a shed brand: you will not find it in B&Q.

    Fits: 36V MultiVolt tools, and virtually all HiKOKI 18V slide tools at 18V, because the pack detects which and switches itself. BSL36A18 is 36V 2.5 Ah / 18V 5.0 Ah; BSL36B18 is 36V 4.0 Ah / 18V 8.0 Ah.

    Not: The larger BSL36B18 does not fit the AW18DBL, G18DBAL, C18DBL, UB18DGL, UF18DSL/UF18DSAL, cordless radios or the UC36YRSL charger. Plain 18V packs do not power 36V tools.

  • Worx 20V MAX PowerShare · 20 V

    Amazon UK, B&Q, Argos, Homebase, some lines at Screwfix, and worx.com/en-gb direct.

    Fits: All Worx 20V tools, and two packs run the 40V tools (WA3551 2.0 Ah, WA3553 4.0 Ah, WA3641 6.0 Ah). Worx markets '20V MAX' for what is an 18 V nominal pack, so do not read it as a higher-voltage system.

    Not: Other brands.

  • Metabo 18V / CAS (Cordless Alliance System) · 18 V

    ITS, D&M Tools, Powertool World, specialist dealers, Amazon UK.

    Fits: All Metabo 18V machines since 2009, and 500-plus tools from more than 50 CAS brands (Mafell, Rothenberger, Collomix, Starmix, Steinel and others).

    Not: Metabo HPT / HiKOKI and every other system.

  • Kärcher Battery Power 18V and 36V · 18 V

    B&Q, Homebase, Argos, Amazon UK, Screwfix.

    Fits: Within a voltage class every Kärcher Home & Garden and Professional device and battery interchange, and Battery Power and Battery Power+ packs are interchangeable.

    Not: Across voltages: packs are coded, so 18V only in 18V devices, never in 36V.

  • Festool 18V · 18 V

    Specialist dealers (Axminster, D&M Tools) and Amazon UK. Festool UK runs a controlled dealer network rather than general shed distribution.

    Fits: All Festool 18V tools except the ETSC 125, RTSC 400, DTSC 400 and CTC SYS, which use their own compact pack or the ACA 18V mains adapter.

    Not: Other brands. Batteries older than the BPC generation generally cannot be charged on the TCL 6 or SCA 8.

How it works

Method and assumptions

Compatibility is by platform, not by brand name: a battery fits a tool when the voltage, the slide rail and the electronics all match. The table lists what each platform sold in the UK fits, what it does not, and the traps (Bosch blue versus green, Makita LXT versus XGT, Erbauer EXT versus Titan TXP, Titan TXP versus older Titan, Ryobi 18 V versus 36 V) that catch people at the trade counter.

Runtime is energy divided by power. An 18 V 5 Ah pack holds about 90 Wh. A drill pulling 250 W with the trigger held gets about 22 minutes of trigger time from it, which is more than an hour of real work because the trigger is only pulled a quarter of the time. The presets below use typical average draws and duty cycles; your tool, material and technique move the answer either way.

Charge time is capacity divided by charger current, with about 15% added for the slower top-up at the end of a charge. Fast chargers reach 80% quickly and then taper.

Compatibility notes summarise manufacturer statements and UK retail listings and can lag new releases. Check the tool's manual for approved batteries. Adapters and non-genuine packs are used at your own risk: they bypass the protection circuits, void tool and battery warranties, and have caused fires when charged through an adapter.

Are Erbauer and Titan batteries interchangeable?+

No. Both are Screwfix own brands sold in the same shop, but Erbauer EXT and Titan TXP are separate systems and neither pack runs the other's tools. There is a second trap inside Titan itself: the TXP range is not compatible with previous non-TXP Titan tools and batteries, so an older Titan 18V tool and a new TXP pack will not work together. Check the tool actually says TXP before you buy a pack for it. Buying into either platform also means buying into one retailer: neither is sold outside Screwfix.

Do Bosch blue and Bosch green 18 V batteries fit each other?+

No. Bosch Professional (blue, GBA and ProCORE packs) and Bosch Home & Garden (green, POWER FOR ALL packs) are separate 18 V systems with different rails, and the chargers do not cross either: a Professional charger will not charge a green battery and vice versa. Plenty of listings blur the two, so check the colour and the range name before you buy a body-only tool.

Can I run a DeWalt FlexVolt battery on 18 V XR tools?+

Yes. FlexVolt packs (DCB546 6.0/2.0 Ah, DCB547 9.0/3.0 Ah, DCB548 12.0/4.0 Ah) switch to 18 V on 18V XR tools and to 54 V on FlexVolt tools. They are heavy, so they suit saws and grinders more than a drill you hold overhead, and they do not work with the DCA1820 adapter for old pod-style tools.

What is the difference between a 110V and a 240V tool?+

UK building sites run 110V centre-tapped-earth supply through a yellow transformer, so most brands sell the same corded tool and some chargers in both a 110V and a 230/240V build, separated only by a suffix. Makita marks the 110V version /1 and the 240V version /2 (Screwfix lists the HR3210C/1 as 110V and the HR3210C/2 as 240V), and DeWalt uses -LX for 110V. A 110V tool is perfectly genuine stock, but it will not run from a 13 A socket at home without a site transformer. It is the single most common UK model-number mistake, and the Model Number Decoder page lists the suffix for each brand.

What does a Ryobi charger flashing red and green mean?+

On Ryobi's single-port chargers, red flashing on its own means the charger is evaluating a hot, cold or deeply discharged pack and will start once it is ready. Red and green flashing together means the charger has judged the pack (or itself) defective: remove and refit the pack, try another pack if you have one, and if a second pack also shows the fault the charger is the problem.

How long does an 18 V 5 Ah battery last on a drill?+

About 90 Wh of energy. At a typical 250 W average draw that is about 22 minutes with the trigger held, which stretches to more than an hour of normal work because the trigger is pulled only part of the time. On manufacturer runtime figures a 5 Ah pack drives on the order of 1,500 to 2,000 small screws into softwood. Long screws into hardwood or into engineered timber pull far more.

Can I take power tool batteries on a plane?+

Spare lithium batteries must go in the cabin, never in hold baggage, with the terminals individually protected against short circuit. The CAA limits are by watt-hour: packs up to 100 Wh (an 18 V 5 Ah pack is 90 Wh) need no approval; 100 to 160 Wh (an 18 V 6 Ah pack is 108 Wh) need the airline's approval in advance; above 160 Wh (an 18 V 12 Ah pack is 216 Wh) is prohibited in passenger baggage altogether. Power banks are capped at two per person and must not be charged in flight.

Are battery adapters safe?+

Adapters that let one brand's battery run another brand's tool bypass the tool's communication with the pack, so low-voltage cut-off and overload protection may not work. Never charge a battery through an adapter. If you use one, keep it to low-draw tools such as lights and accept that the tool warranty is gone.
